Polyphony
—

2010

Polyphony is a video installation comprising portraits of seven figures: three women and four men. Each figure is simultaneously reciting a long list of fantasies in alphabetical order, speaking in German, English, Spanish, French, Finnish, Dutch or Portuguese. These fantasies are expressed in the form “I am…” or “I am not….”. At the end of each series of fantasies starting with the same letter (a, b, c, etc.), each narrator takes on the voice and thus the language of one of the other figures to continue the list of fantasies for the next letter and so on. The voices and languages are exchanged in random order without taking account of the gender of the figures.

This piece is about exploring the relationship to the multiple “I”, the interpretation of fantasy, and the play of spoken language and dubbing.
